Federal authorities has entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, submitted to federal court, challenges the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Broader Implications
The legal battle represents the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
